Dear supporter,
GVI in partnership with Australian Access to Quality Education Program (AQEP) have successfully handed over 6 compost toilets to Ratu Meli Memorial School (RMMS) at the end of 2015.
The school is in an area that is prone to drought and relies on rainwater. Back in 2013 GVI installed a single composting toilet to ensure that the students had access to toilets during the dry season. Unfortunately, during a recent bush fire, the toilet was destroyed which meant that the kids had to use pit toilets. So it is wonderful that we have agin been able to provide the school with toilets.
The four-block structure is located behind the school hall and an additional two-block structure is near the boarding house. We also managed to carry out repair work to some of the water pipes that connect the well to the existing flush toilet block.
After the completion of the construction, we also ran training and awareness workshops with all stakeholders involved. The training is crucial to ensure that the toilets are used and maintained correctly. We covered topics such as the importance of sanitation, composting toilets as an alternative solution, benefits and functionality of composting toilets and maintenance and use of the toilets. 183 community members were reached during these sessions.
We are looking forward to seeing how these upgrades will bring about positive changes in 2016!
Thank you for your support and for the support of all stakeholders involved.
With Gratitude,
GVI Fiji
