The project evolved from the initiative on street families. It started by providing basic services such as temporary shelter, education and health; productive skills development; and organizational development to them. The current initiative is now focusing on the education of out of school youth of Manila. Its major objective is to provide educational opportunities for children in challenging situations and eventually, have them finish primary, secondary, vocational or tertiary schooling.
There are numerous reasons why children drop out of school. Within district 5 Manila, it is often economic in nature. Children are seen as an extension of their parents in trying to make ends meet; thus, they are persuaded to look for productive work instead on completing their studies. Its long term implication include the failure of the youth to find more gainful employment since they are under-educated. More often, under-educated employees are more prone to abuse.
The alternative learning system offers education to out of school youth in a manner that encourages them to finish each level, thereby inching their way to more productive careers in the future.
Ultimately, the project encourages the students to return and eventually to finish school, get into higher education if they wish to, or learn productive technical and vocational skills that can provide a more gainful employment for them in the future.
