The basic school kit, which includes books, a backpack, a uniform, and stationery, exceeds €500, representing between 10% and 30% of the monthly income of nearly 69% of households. This poses a challenge for the families of more than 2.7 million children and adolescents (34.1%) who are at risk of poverty and/or social exclusion. At SOS Children’s Villages, we work to reduce the educational and digital gap by providing support throughout the school year to 4,562 children and adolescents and 1,680 families referred by Social Services.
What do we do at SOS Children’s Villages?
In our 32 Day Care Centers, we provide school supplies, books, food, clothing, footwear, hygiene products, and educational support to 4,284 children and adolescents referred by Social Services, while also supporting 1,438 families. We pay special attention to the mental health of children and adolescents.
We have 5 Early Childhood Education Centers, providing access to education for 278 children aged 0 to 3 years and support for 242 families. Many of them live in socially vulnerable situations.
Multidisciplinary teams made up of educators, social workers, psychologists, and pedagogues work alongside volunteers and in close collaboration with schools, therapists, and Social Services to ensure that children, adolescents, and their families receive the tools and support they need to face the school year on equal terms with their peers.
It is essential to guarantee equal opportunities in access to education. Education is a powerful tool for children and adolescents to overcome marginalization and fully integrate into society. It contributes to the integral development of the person and is a key indicator of social progress.
