Schools may be closed, but learning is not!

Times are challenging right now. In a very short amount of time, our world has turned upside-down and our near future is filled with so many unknowns. As we continue to navigate these uncertain times, the health and safety of our students, teachers, staff, and volunteers remains of upmost importance to us. Due to their exemplary work in responding to the Ebola crisis that hit parts of Africa a few years ago, our outstanding staff in Sierra Leone is well prepared for a time such as this.

On March 31, the government of Sierra Leone mandated that all schools in Sierra Leone be shut down to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Fortunately for EduNations, we had anticipated the closure of schools and were able to adjust the school calendar to allow all our schools to complete their second term examinations. Even though schools were forced to close, the government of Sierra Leone has declared that all national exams will still take place in July. These exams determine if students can move forward to the next grade level, so it is crucial that our students be prepared to take them.

Since most of our students live in remote villages with no internet access, EduNations has developed a homeschooling program for the students who are required to take national exams this year. A study packet has been delivered to each student to help prepare them. Our teachers have also returned to the villages and have been assigned a small handful of students to tutor one-on-one each day while remaining socially distant and wearing face masks for protection.

We are so grateful for our teachers who are continuing to overcome obstacles and make a difference in the lives of their students. Our administrative staff will continue their work and will remain engaged with the communities we serve. We as an organization will continue to remain true to our mission and will continue to support all of our staff, students, and communities during this difficult time. Thank you for your continued support as we all navigate this difficult time together.
