Electrifying Masisi through Rural Hydropower

By VERITE | CORDINATOR

Electrify Rural North Kivu with 20 kW Pico Hydro
Implementing Organization: VEFA Foundation
Target Area: Masisi Territory, North Kivu (DRC)

1. Background and Rationale

In many rural areas of Masisi, access to a reliable energy source remains a major challenge. Villages located near waterfalls have strong hydropower potential, yet they still live without electricity. This situation slows rural development, limits the functioning of health facilities, weakens agricultural activities, and exposes communities to nighttime insecurity.

The lack of electricity is not only a technical issue; it directly affects quality of life, safety, health, and economic opportunities for families.

2. Problem Statement

The absence of stable energy in rural Masisi leads to:

  • limited economic empowerment of communities;
  • poorly functioning basic infrastructure;
  • restricted health services, especially at night;
  • slow growth of agriculture and small local businesses;
  • increased insecurity after dark.

Without a sustainable solution, these communities will remain marginalized despite their natural resources.

3. Project Objective

This project aims to build two micro-hydroelectric plants with a total capacity of 20 kW, providing clean, reliable, and sustainable electricity to rural communities in Masisi.

Specific objectives include:

  • strengthening local energy autonomy;
  • improving nighttime safety;
  • supporting health facilities and community infrastructure;
  • stimulating agriculture and small local businesses.

4. Project Description

The project will install two pico-hydropower units using local waterfalls. This technology is well suited to rural contexts, offering continuous energy production with minimal environmental impact.

At the same time, VEFA Foundation is currently in the process of identifying trainers and trainees to ensure local capacity building and sustainable management of the facilities. Communities will be involved from the outset, promoting ownership and long-term sustainability.

5. Expected Results

  • Regular access to electricity for households and essential services;
  • Improved performance of health centers;
  • Growth of income-generating activities;
  • Reduced nighttime insecurity;
  • Stronger community resilience to future challenges.

6. Long-Term Impact

This project will have a lasting impact by turning energy access into a driver of local development. Electricity will enable communities in Masisi to access better healthcare, work more efficiently, and plan for the future with greater stability and dignity.

7. Budget and Funding Status

  • Total Project Budget: USD 25,000
  • Funds Raised to Date: USD 0
