Dear Friends and Supporters,

As 2024 draws to a close, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continued support, which has made significant progress possible in our mission to promote coexistence between communities and elephants in Botswana. In the final quarter of the year, we successfully conducted three more Living With Elephants workshops, which remain a cornerstone of our efforts to enhance safety and resilience among communities living near the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. These workshops attracted diverse participants, including farmers, herders, and other community members directly affected by elephant activity.

The workshops provided attendees with essential tools, knowledge, and strategies to mitigate human-elephant conflict. Sessions focused on understanding elephant behavior and implementing measures to safeguard crops and livestock. Participants were trained on a range of techniques to protect their livelihoods while minimizing harm to elephants. These practical tools are designed to empower communities to address challenges effectively.

We also introduced a new session on the safe use of chilli for elephant deterrence. This training included proper handling and application techniques, as well as the use of personal protective equipment for safety. This preparation lays the groundwork for the distribution of chilli and chilli burners to farmers in 2025.

The active participation and positive engagement from attendees reaffirm the value of these workshops in building capacity and fostering coexistence. By addressing the unique challenges faced by communities, we are not only reducing human-elephant conflict but also contributing to the long-term sustainability of these regions.

We remain dedicated to supporting these communities through continued training, resources, and follow-up activities. Looking ahead, your support will help us expand these efforts, ensuring a brighter future for both people and elephants.

Thank you for being an integral part of this journey. Together, we are making a difference.

With gratitude,

The Elephants for Africa Team
