Hola friends,
We are just under two months away from our next fruit tree planting journey to El Salvador! This year, we will be planting roughly 5,000 fruit trees across the country, focusing our efforts primarily in areas hardest hit by both the pandemic and climate change.
Our aim is to support low-income households and smallholder farmers in their ability to be self-sufficient, creating income and providing nutrition through the planting of orchards on their lands and within their broader communities. The trees are selected to thrive in the local climate, while also considering income-generating potential and adaptability to changing weather.
We also incorporate many native fruit trees, most notably the ohjushte or breadnut tree, which has been a staple in local Mayan diets for generations. This tree is an environmental, nutritional and cultural powerhouse--and one with increasing demand after falling victim to deforestation over the previous decades.
If you are able, please consider donating today to support the planting of the ohjushte alongside the dozen or so other beautiful fruit tree varieties in El Salvador this July. It is thanks to the generosity of people like you we are able to plant thousands of fruit trees in El Salvador every year, and hopefully for many more years to come...
Muchas gracias,
The FTPF Team
