Nueva Esperanza in El Salvador

Planting & distribution at Nueva Esperanza in July

Hola friends,

We’re pleased to share a community update from our ongoing work in El Salvador, where fruit trees are helping build climate and economic resilience while strengthening local food systems.

During a visit this July to Cooperativa Nueva Esperanza, we planted new trees, saw the success of previous years’ plantings, and heard from the community about the legacy they are leaving. The cooperative’s secretary shared that, as a child, he would find relief from the hot sun and satisfy his hunger by picking fruit from trees in the countryside that someone else had planted. He called on his fellow members to carry that tradition forward, planting trees today for not only their children to pick from, but also those of future generations.

The name of this cooperative, meaning “New Hope,” is fitting. Every tree planted and cared for by its members is a renewed act of hope for a future where everyone can enjoy the fruit and shade of trees planted by those before them.

Nueva Esperanza is part of our broader El Salvador program, now in its twelfth year, which has planted tens of thousands of fruit trees with families and farmer cooperatives across the country. These trees strengthen small-holder farmers’ incomes, improve soils, create cooler microclimates, and contribute to climate resilience. From cocoa and mamey to ojushte, achiote, and guayaba, each tree helps communities withstand environmental challenges while supporting sustainable livelihoods.

We are deeply grateful to the cooperative members, their community, and our partners at CIETTA and the Share Foundation for their efforts and passion that make this work possible. And thanks to all of you — your support ensures that even more families and communities can grow orchards that nourish both people and the land.

With gratitude,

The FTPF Team
