Dear Friend,
Happy holidays! Due to your ongoing support, we are excited to report that last year the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation planted and distributed 22,255 fruit trees and held 117 orchard events for poverty-stricken communities and schools in East Africa, Central America, and the U.S. Along the way, our staff provided horticultural training for more than two thousand tree planters and environmental curriculum for more than two thousand students--inspiring the next generation of environmentalists.
In El Salvador, FTPF is in the midst of a ten-year project to plant 100,000 native breadnut, mango, and cacao trees for low-income families to provide a source of income and nutrition. While visiting one family to evaluate trees we planted previously, our team was greeted with a basket full of juicy, purple mangos. The president of the community association told us: "We have been able to feed ourselves, make money, and have noticed a change in the environment...a return in the native bee population and the health of the soil around the river. Thank you for all the effort you have put in towards the success of our land."
After such a great response, combined with an excellent survival rate of last year's trees, FTPF is returning to El Salvador next year to implement the fourth installment of this program. Our team is currently hard at work with project planning, and are thrilled to continue to receive additional support from the Global Giving Community in order to reach our goals and begin implementation. We are equally excited to work with amazing non-profits like our partners on the ground in El Salvador, SHARE El Salvador and CONFRAS, without whom we would not be able to return next year with thousands more trees.
"100,000 Trees for El Salvador" will create outdoor, edible classrooms for schools, provide a source of improved nutrition and environmental education, and bring added income to families in need all while cleaning the air, water, and soil. We look forward to bringing you future updates and additional details once we reach our goals. And again, our thanks to YOU and the entire GlobalGiving community for your generous support!
Gratefully,
The entire FTPF team
