Hunger is an issue that is closer than we think. It may be present in the home of the neighbors next door or in the lives of the friendly children who greeted you this morning as you crossed the street. We often associate hunger with distant countries, but the reality is that it also affects nearby and vulnerable communities.
Childhood is a crucial stage for physical, emotional, and cognitive development, and experiencing hunger can have lifelong, devastating effects. The lack of resources and income needed to maintain a balanced diet forces many families to rely on ultra-processed foods, which can lead to an increase in various forms of malnutrition (such as overweight or obesity).
In Spain, children also go hungry
Lacking access to a minimum caloric intake or relying on ultra-processed foods is associated with a 30% higher likelihood of poor overall health, a 36% higher risk of being overweight, and a 12% higher chance of suffering from depression. In fact, 33% of Spanish children and adolescents are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, according to the latest report from the Plataforma de Infancia.
This situation leads to food insecurity, which, as defined by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), involves a lack of "sufficient safe and nutritious food to support normal growth and development and an active and healthy life." In our country, this condition doubled after the COVID-19 pandemic.
But what are the consequences of food insecurity in children?
- Health problems: Such as stunted growth, malnutrition, and obesity. They may also develop chronic conditions like anemia or recurrent infections.
- Impact on mental health: It can manifest in behavioral issues, difficult social relationships, and lead to stress, anxiety, or depression.
- School performance: The lack of nutrients affects children's ability to concentrate, learn, and retain information.
