Two years of Caritas emergency response in Ukraine

For decades, Caritas and its partner organizations have been providing assistance in Ukraine. However, over the past two years, the humanitarian situation has drastically deteriorated due to the brutal Russian invasion, leading to a fivefold increase in the need for humanitarian aid. Consequently, Caritas has significantly expanded its assistance since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, supporting nearly 4 million people through local Caritas organizations.

Thanks in part to your donation, we have been able to provide the following assistance:

  • 500 tons of relief supplies from Caritas Austria have been delivered to Ukraine, supporting 240,000 people. This assistance was particularly crucial in the early months.
  • Provision of accommodations for internally displaced persons, supply of heating materials, food, medicines, emergency power supply, repairs, crisis counseling, operation of Child Friendly Spaces, and provision of learning spaces for children on the move.
  • Cash assistance to financially support and empower affected individuals, allowing them to determine their family's most essential needs.
  • Winter assistance, including Heating Points for potential power outages with mobile phone charging stations, soup kitchens for warm meals, and distribution of heating materials, sleeping bags, and blankets.
  • Emergency power generators ensure uninterrupted humanitarian assistance. Caritas Austria has already delivered more than 100 generators to Ukraine.
  • Internally displaced persons receive vital information, food, drinking water, personal hygiene items, psychosocial support, cash, and a safe place to sleep, eat, and wash.
  • After the attack on the Kachowka Dam, Caritas was on-site within hours, establishing a logistics route for drinking water in just two days. 48 tons of humanitarian relief goods were dispatched, accommodations were provided for evacuated individuals, and a financial assistance program for flood victims was initiated.
  • In cities under attack, emergency centers and shelters have been set up where, if possible, medications and food are distributed.
  • In hospitals, Caritas supports with hygiene products and food. Heat tents are set up in coordination with municipalities to provide protection against the cold.
  • Supply and evacuation of particularly vulnerable groups: Orphans and individuals with disabilities and serious illnesses are evacuated, and our assistance in child and family centers and home healthcare continues.
  • Assistance for people arriving in neighboring countries: According to UN OCHA, approximately 7.8 million people have fled across the border to neighboring countries such as Poland, Moldova, Slovakia, and Russia since the beginning of the war. We assist refugees with food, shelter, water, hygiene, cash, and psychological support.

Thank you for enabling our support through your donation!
