For the fourth year running, people in
war-torn areas of Ukraine are
experiencing how destroyed homes and
attacks on civilian infrastructure and
social services make survival in
freezing temperatures extremely
difficult.
Ukraine: War and Cold
“In addition to the constant
psychological and physical strain of
rocket alerts and shelling, they now
also face the dangers of the cold
temperatures,” says CEO of
Aktion Deutschland Hilft.
“Many people are living in destroyed homes
without electricity or gas – a situation
that quickly becomes life-threatening in
winter. That’s why it’s so important right
now to provide assistance for safe
protection from the cold.”
Aid organizations deliver wood pellets and gas cylinders
Many families in devastated villages in
Ukraine lack functioning heating systems
and gas stoves for cooking. The medical
aid organization action medeor supports
affected households with fuels such as
wood pellets when they can no longer
afford a gas supply. Gas cylinders are
also distributed if functioning gas stoves
or cookers are still available.
“Many houses have been damaged by the war
and are often only superficially repaired.
The roofs leak, and the gas supply is
frequently interrupted. But even where it
still works, many people cannot afford to buy
gas. Every day they have to decide how to
spend what little they have: on food, medicine,
or heating fuel. They can't buy everything,”
says press officer at action medeor.
Johanniter Support Hospitals in Ukraine
In the Sumy region, the partner organization of
Aktion Deutschland Hilft, Johanniter, are
supplying 15 healthcare facilities with 385
tons of wood to ensure continued operation even
during power outages and cold temperatures.
Many people live in inadequately heated rooms,
which facilitates the spread of respiratory
illnesses.
Hospitals supported by the Johanniter can treat
approximately 20 to 30 patients each, for example,
through the diagnosis and prevention of common
diseases such as infections and heart conditions.
The risk of power and gas outages remains
Many people in the war zones of Ukraine are
increasingly worried about potential attacks on
civilian infrastructure such as the power and gas
supply. “People in Ukraine are facing the fourth
winter of war with great anxiety. Blackouts are
already occurring in some regions, and further
power and gas outages are feared in the coming
months due to targeted attacks,” says Country
Director for Ukraine at Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe.
During the cold winter months, our partner
organization, Help, is also supporting affected
families in Ukraine in winterizing their homes.
This includes repairing damaged windows and heating
systems. The aid organization is also distributing
heating materials to ensure people have a warm home.
