Project Summary

The Emergency & Disaster Relief – Nepal project will provide rapid humanitarian assistance to vulnerable communities affected by earthquakes, floods, landslides, fires, extreme weather events, and other emergencies.

Nepal faces significant disaster risks because of its geography and exposure to earthquakes, floods, landslides, fires, drought, heat and cold waves, and other climate-related hazards. The IFRC reports that more than 40,000 people, or approximately 8,000 households, are affected by disasters in Nepal in an average year.

International Community Grants will work with local communities and relevant humanitarian partners to deliver life-saving assistance, including emergency food, clean drinking water, hygiene supplies, temporary shelter materials, basic medical support, and protection for vulnerable people.

Main Objectives

1. Provide rapid emergency assistance to families affected by disasters.

2. Supply food, safe drinking water, hygiene materials, and essential household items.

3. Support emergency shelter for displaced families.

4. Provide basic health and first-aid assistance and referrals.

5. Prioritize children, women, older people, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.

6. Strengthen community preparedness and local disaster-response capacity.

7. Support early recovery and restoration of essential livelihoods where possible.

Key Activities

• Emergency needs assessments following disasters.

• Distribution of food and essential household supplies.

• Provision of safe drinking water and WASH services.

• Distribution of emergency shelter and household materials.

• Emergency health and first-aid support.

• Community disaster-preparedness training.

• Support for evacuation and emergency response activities.

• Cash or voucher assistance where appropriate.

• Assistance with early livelihood recovery.

• Monitoring, accountability, and reporting to donors.

Expected Results

The project aims to help approximately 5,000 vulnerable people during the project period, depending on the scale and frequency of emergencies.

Expected results include:

• Displaced families receive emergency shelter support.

• Communities have improved access to basic health and hygiene services.

• Local communities become better prepared for future disasters.

• A rapid-response mechanism is strengthened for future emergencies.

The project will combine immediate relief with disaster preparedness and community resilience. International Community Grants will support local capacity, preparedness training, community-based response systems, and coordination with relevant authorities and humanitarian organizations.

Nepal's current disaster-response priorities also emphasize shelter, WASH, food, health, protection, emergency logistics, early warning, and community resilience.

Long-Term Impact

The project will help vulnerable communities recover from emergencies while strengthening their ability to prepare for and respond to future disasters. By combining emergency relief with preparedness and resilience activities, International Community Grants aims to reduce the human and economic impact of disasters and help affected families rebuild safer and more sustainable lives.
