Report on Distribution of food items and winter heating supplies in Afghanistan (Dec 2021-Jan 2022)
The current situation
The current conflict, the high levels of unemployment and displacement, make access to food in Afghanistan today extremely difficult. Salaries have not been paid, prices have increased, many have lost their jobs, and more importantly women who were the only bread winners were banned from working.
What is Action for Development doing to help?
To reduce the number of deaths caused by malnutrition and cold weather in Afghanistan, Action For Development reached 560 families (4,480 individuals) by distributing food and coal to survive the harsh winter.
Organizing three main distribution dates - the 4th, 10th and 26th of January 2022 - our field officers worked on identifying and creating the list of eligible vulnerable beneficiaries and carefully assessed the current market and prices to gather the necessary materials.
On the first day, 160 bags of rice (10kg) and 160 bottles of oil (5 liter each) along with 8 kg onion and 7 kg potato, were distributed to the families of the street children through the two centers in Kabul.
The second day, 200 bags of rice (24.5kg) and 200 bottles of oil (5 liter each) were distributed to the families identified through outreach survey teams. These beneficiaries included: widows and orphans, poor and vulnerable households who did not have a regular means of income, or whose income was cut due to the recent governmental changes, families of previous military soldiers, families where the main breadwinner was a disabled. Among these 80 families were supported in Parwan province (Charikar, Qalaie bland, and Bagram road, Sayad), 30 in Kapisa province (Hesaie Awal/Kohestanat), and the remaining 90 families in Kabul.
On the third day, 200 families were reached. As a response to the harsh winter conditions and severe cold (nights reaching up to -15C) an additional distribution of coal bags was done to the 200 families in Kabul province so that the “sandali” in the very poor families households could be heated to keep the family members and children warm, under the duvets, with heated-up air.
