Afghanistan still faces a severe need for humanitarian assistance in providing food to families who have been affected by decades of war. The ongoing conflict is a major compounding factor that has prevented the growth of infrastructure within the country and Afghanistan's economy, which would otherwise provide easy access to basic items such as warm winter clothing, abundant food items, and safe transportation to access these items.
As we enter the summer season we are preparing for the coming winter, which may bring even more challenges as a result of the recent earthquakes. Already before the recent earthquakes, “More than 23 million Afghans face acute hunger, including 9 million who are nearly famished.” (UNICEF World Food Programme).
Stated in a press release issued by UNICEF on Afghanistan in May, “1.1 million children are expected to suffer from severe wasting this year, nearly double the number in 2018.” as a result of increasing food prices and “pandemic-fueled” budget cuts.
During this past Spring Mohammed Alam, son of Sayeed Hahsam and resident of Kapisa Province in Afghanistan shared with us about the situation in Afghanistan. You can view the full video and what the food packs look like on the AfD youtube channel, or here.
“I want to thank the AfD organization. With their help they helped a number of needy and poor people in Kapisa. Thank you and we hope for more because the people in Afghanistan are in a bad economic situation. We know some people who have problems with their day and night meal. Thank you for helping us, we hope for their attention in the future.”
Fareshta, from Talashida Village and beneficiary of AfDs project Feed the Hungry, Warm the Cold, commented on the program:
“Thanks to AfD for sending us this help. We hope for more collaboration because we are in dire need of help. We have so many problems. We hope for future cooperation.”
See the full video of Fareshta on the AfD youtube channel as well as more videos on the progress of the organization and on the ground in Afghanistan. You can also see the full video here.
During the recent period of February 2022 - June 2022, AfD’s project Feed the Hungry, Warm the Cold raised $1,075USD from donors around the world to provide warm clothing and nutritious food to families in the city of Kabul and rural Afghanistan.
