"How long with my generation battle with agony? When will we ever have peace of mind and stable life? When will we know that life exists without an emergency? I grew up in civil war and then Ebola, and now it is COVID 19 that is seen as unstoppable" (Yarkpawolo).
Upon hearing about the news of the resurgence of the COVID 19 in Liberia with its Delta variant, the entire nation was in shock, with everyone asking themselves different questions about the next step. The variant rapidly spread throughout the country, thus overwhelming hospitals and taking an aggressive death tour on the local population during the period. World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Embassy declared Liberia a red zone due to the surge of the COVID 19 Variant. The Government of Liberia enforced mandatory health regulations, including the compulsory wearing of masks, washing hands, keeping a safe distance, and keeping away from crowded places. But due to the poverty and ignorance of our society, these regulations were complicated to hold, if not impossible. Before the outbreak of COVID 19, the Liberian health sector was already devastated by the lack of drugs, professionals, health petitioners, and other medical equipment. This new outbreak even made the situation worse. The entire country succumbed to sickness, and everyone began seeking self-medication to keep themselves saved. In addition to this grief surge of the COVID 19 and already devastated Liberia economy went into a coma.
Despite these challenging conditions, we continued providing mass education across the different neighborhoods, asking people to go by the health mandate and listen to the science. We conducted a door-to-door campaign distributing nose masks, handwash budgets, leaflets, asking people to take advantage of the vaccines, etc., to keep themselves safe. Our engagement helped reduce the daily case rate, and people have begun returning to everyday life again.
We would not have achieved these without the support of our partners, so we are grateful for their donations that have kept us safe and working for the betterment of our community.
