Emergency food, clean water, medicine and shelter for 15,000 families in Freetown's KrooBay slum when floods destroy homes and leave entire community underwater. When heavy rains hit, families lose everything overnight and children sleep in cold contaminated water. CINORG responds within 1 hour with food packs, water purification tablets, malaria treatment, ORS and emergency tarpaulins. Your gift keeps the whole community safe, healthy and housed until floods recede.
Freetown's largest slum built on the sea; 15,000 people live in wooden shacks over black dirty water. 80% of residents are women and children who survive on less than $2 a day. From May to October, heavy rains cause severe flash floods in just 30 minutes, the entire community is underwater 3 to 4 feet high. This happens 6 to 8 times every year. 2,500 homes flood at once, families lose food, mattresses, schoolbooks in one night. Clean drinking water mixes with toilet waste. Cholera & typhoid
CINORG is already inside KrooBay with 35 volunteers and a flood safe center. Before flood season, we stock emergency supplies, dry rice, clean water, purification tablets, malaria drugs, ORS, tarpaulins, blankets. When flood alert comes, 1. Rescue elders, pregnant women and children by the Community Disaster Management Committee (CDMC) 2. Move 200 families to our safe center 3. Distribute hot food, clean water and medicine door to door 4. Provide dry shelter kits to families affected
500 families (3,000 people) get lifesaving food, clean water and medicine within 24 hours of each flood, preventing cholera and malaria deaths. Short term: 100 families whose shocks collapse get shelter kits to stay dry and safe. Long term: We train 50 youth volunteers as Flood Wardens, create early warning with community bells, and build 2 raised water tanks with clean water that never floods. Community learns to prepare not just suffer. Year1: Zero child drownings in KrooBay
