Children Bear the Greatest Burden of the Karamoja

By Jawanghe Joseph | Project Leader

Children continue to suffer the most devastating consequences of the ongoing hunger emergency in Karamoja. Across the region, prolonged drought and repeated crop failures have drastically reduced household food supplies, leaving thousands of children without adequate nutrition during their most important years of growth and development.

Many health facilities continue to record increasing cases of acute malnutrition among children under five years of age. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are also struggling to meet their nutritional needs, increasing the risk of illness, low birth weight, and poor child development. Families often survive on only one meal a day, and in some communities, parents go without food entirely to ensure their children have something to eat.

The crisis has also affected education. Hungry children find it difficult to concentrate in class, resulting in poor academic performance, absenteeism, and school dropouts. Some children are forced into casual labor or long journeys in search of food and water instead of attending school.

Immediate humanitarian assistance is essential to prevent further deterioration. Support for emergency food assistance, therapeutic feeding programs, school feeding initiatives, clean water, and child protection services can help save lives while giving children the opportunity to grow, learn, and build a brighter future.
