Karamoja Is Hungry: Families Are Running Out of Food, Water, and Hope

Across Karamoja in northeastern Uganda, a devastating hunger crisis is unfolding.

Prolonged drought and widespread crop failures have left families struggling to find enough food to survive. At least 19 deaths from hunger have been reported, while approximately 1.5 million people are facing acute food shortages. Behind these numbers are mothers who cannot feed their children, families watching their crops fail, and communities wondering where their next meal will come from.

According to IPC analysis, more than 432,000 people are experiencing crisis-level food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 and above) across all nine districts of Karamoja. The situation is particularly severe in Kaabong, Kotido, Karenga, Moroto, and Nabilatuk.

Families Need Help Now

The Government of Uganda has begun emergency food distributions, with the Office of the Prime Minister mobilizing 9,419,610 kilograms of maize flour and beans to support 313,987 households, reaching approximately 600,000 people considered most at risk. This emergency response is supported by a Shs 45 billion presidential directive.

Relief food is being distributed in affected communities, while churches and other public institutions have also launched food collection drives to help families facing hunger.

But the scale of this crisis is enormous.

Emergency food relief can save lives today—but families also need support to rebuild their futures.

Our Response: From Emergency Relief to Long-Term Resilience

At Good Cause Foundation Uganda, we believe that no child should go to bed hungry and no family should be left without hope.

Through our Emergency Food & Nutrition for Karamoja Families initiative, we are seeking support to provide immediate food and nutrition assistance to vulnerable families while helping communities build resilience against future droughts and food crises.

Our long-term approach includes supporting communities with:

Emergency food and nutrition support
Access to clean and safe water
Drought-tolerant and early-maturing seeds
Climate-smart and sustainable agriculture
Livestock recovery and livelihood support
Income-generating opportunities for vulnerable households
Protection and support for children at risk of malnutrition

Your Support Can Help Save a Life

For a family facing hunger, $10 can be more than a donation—it can be a lifeline.

For a child who has gone without enough food, your kindness can mean a meal, renewed strength, and the chance to return to school and dream again.

For a community facing drought, your support can help provide food today and resilience for tomorrow.

Karamoja is facing one of its most difficult moments. We cannot allow families to face this crisis alone.

We invite you to stand with the people of Karamoja.

Your donation can help us bring food to hungry families, support vulnerable children, and help communities rebuild with dignity and hope.
