Progress Report 1

By Japan Heart | Project Leader

From July to September 2024, significant progress was made in the "Chat Café" initiative aimed at supporting residents in temporary housing in Monzen Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, following the Noto Peninsula earthquake. The events provided a vital platform for interaction between the residents and Japan Heart staff, helping to uncover pressing challenges and foster a sense of community.

Key Developments:

  • Increased Participation: The second event, held on July 20-21, saw a notable rise in attendance compared to the first session. Despite the intense heat, staff took precautions to ensure the well-being of participants.
  • Challenges in Temporary Housing: Conversations revealed several issues, such as difficulties in operating air conditioning among elderly residents, leading to discomfort in the summer heat. Limited space and storage in the temporary housing units also caused concerns, particularly as residents prepared for the upcoming winter. These challenges highlight the need for continued support in improving living conditions.
  • Fostering Closer Connections: Repeated events have helped bridge the gap between residents and the support team. Returning participants provided positive feedback, expressing appreciation for the consistent presence of volunteers, which has deepened trust and communication.
  • Loneliness and Isolation: Many elderly residents shared their fears of loneliness and the potential of dying alone. The lack of social interaction and limited mobility further exacerbated these concerns, underscoring the importance of community-building activities and regular check-ins.
  • Information Disparities: Some residents faced challenges in accessing information about available financial aid, especially those with limited mobility. The events provided an opportunity to address this gap by sharing critical information during the gatherings.

Key Learnings
:

  • The volunteers gained first-hand experience of the real-life struggles faced by earthquake survivors, realizing the importance of in-person engagement to fully understand the situation on the ground.
  • Volunteers reported receiving emotional strength from the residents, as many maintained a positive outlook despite their hardships, inspiring the support teams in return.
  • Long-Term Support: The need for sustained, long-term support became apparent, as many challenges residents face are ongoing and will require consistent engagement to resolve. Regular presence in the community has proven effective in alleviating some of the psychological and emotional burdens felt by the residents.

Overall, the "Chat Café" initiative continues to be an essential part of disaster recovery efforts, addressing both the physical and emotional needs of the affected communities.
