Nepal Youth Foundation (NYF) completed its critical emergency relief projects and is now moving towards longer-range efforts to help Nepalis whose lives were severely disrupted by the devastating earthquakes last spring.
One such effort is educational support. NYF has received more than 8,000 applications for scholarships for children and youth affected by the earthquakes.
Working with local education departments and disaster relief committees in five severely affected districts, NYF placed announcements in newspapers, and sent dozens of staff to collect applications, prepare cases studies and conduct interviews.
NYF will offer 230 scholarships for the 10+2 course (junior college), and 1,000 under NYF’s
“Kinship Care” model which covers educational as well as living expenses for children. Children in this program either have parents who cannot care for them or have been orphaned. NYF finds the child’s nearest kin and provides support for the family to cover the child’s education and upbringing. The average cost of a college scholarship is $850 annually. Kinship Care averages $350 a year.
Your generosity will help us assure that these children receive an education and a safe haven.
Namaste!
