With critical emergency relief projects completed, Nepal Youth Foundation (NYF) has turned to longer-range efforts to help Nepalis whose lives were severely disrupted by the devastating earthquakes in 2015.
One such effort is educational support. NYF is now caring for 800 children in its Kinship Care program and 300 youths in our 10+2 program (higher secondary education – equivalent to community college in the U.S.)
The “Kinship Care” model covers educational as well as living expenses for children. Children in this program either have parents who cannot care for them or have been orphaned. NYF finds the child’s nearest kin and provides support for the family to cover the child’s education and upbringing. The average cost of a college scholarship is $850 annually. Kinship Care averages $350 a year.
Anjali is one of the children supported by NYF’s expanded Kinship Care program. Anjali lost both of her parents in the earthquake, when they were buried in a landslide. Now, Anjali lives with her impoverished grandfather, who without help would not be able to support her.
In keeping with NYF’s commitment to long term support, many children, like Anjali, will be supported by Kinship Care for as many as 10 years or until they finish high school and can stand on their own.
Your generosity will help us assure that these children receive an education and a safe haven.
Namaste!
