Empowering Kids through Sport

Celebrating a goal!
Celebrating a goal!

Welcome to our first Project Report! We are glad you have decided to be a part of our journey in providing sports programmes for the children of Siem Reap, and we are looking forward to keeping you updated along the way through these periodic reports.

We are still fundraising for the Sports Programme, but we wanted to reemphasize some of the reasons why this programme is so important for the kids of Cambodia and highlight a couple of sporting events that have taken place recently at our community project in Siem Reap.

Why Sports Programmes are needed in Siem Reap

According to the United Nations: “Psychologists have found that participation in sport in elementary and secondary school facilitates life-skills training and serves as a protective factor against traumatic events such as civil conflict, community violence and early forced marriage of underage girls.” Children in Cambodia face all of these problems, and unfortunately, many do not have access to any sort of sporting activities – especially in more rural areas, like Siem Reap. The last few years have seen a significant improvement in the number of state schools that teach sport in Cambodia; however, the government tends to focus on the capital of Phnom Penh.

It is essential that children do not become invisible in the eyes of society. They must be able to express their opinions and assert their rights, have confidence to stand up for themselves, and have access to opportunities to overcome poverty. Sporting programmes can help open doors and provide important social lessons for students – so let’s bring them to Siem Reap!

Fun Activities at our Siem Reap Community Project!

The students at our Cambodia community project, Helping Hands, have recently had multiple opportunities to get active and moving!

In May, Helping Hands held its first “Slow Bicycle Race” to raise funds for its various programmes. Students had to ride bicycles on the course as slowly as possible without touching the ground with their feet, which requires quite a bit of concentration and muscle control! The day of the race was a great success!

In August, students of all ages participated in the second annual “Temple Run” around the local temple in Prasat Char. Since it was a relay race, it was a valuable lesson in teamwork and sportsmanship. Plus, it brought the entire community together, as parents, teachers, volunteers, and visitors were all invited to participate and cheer on the teams. Great fun was had by all, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s run!

Thank you!

Thank you for reading and as always, thank you for your continued, invaluable support. If you would like to donate, and we hope you do, please visit our page! You can also subscribe to our newsletter for regular Globalteer updates regarding this and all of our other projects!
