The sports programme has been in full swing at Helping Hands school over the last three months. The children have been enjoying daily sports sessions and it’s really showing in the kids’ general fitness levels. The Goals for Girls team has had two sessions so far, working on teamwork and creativity. The next session is planned, with a focus on communication.
The sports team went on an equipment run, purchasing footballs, volleyballs and football goal nets. They also bought some new netting and rope to cordon off our sports field and stop the balls from flying off into neighbouring rice fields! Thanks to a generous donation from our project manager, Jared, we acquired a new disc golf (AKA ultimate frisbee) basket. Helping Hands is now one of perhaps only 3 schools in Cambodia that has disc golf as part of its PE curriculum.
We also welcomed our first sports volunteer after the two-year hiatus! Steven got stuck in and helped expand our repertoire of football drills, making our sport teaching more fun and dynamic.
With new grant funding available from this month, we are amping up our activities again. We’re in the process of hiring new coaches, so that we can get back out to the local schools, both for general PE sessions and to recruit new girls to the Goals for Girls team. We’re so excited to get back to pre-pandemic levels of activity after so long under Covid-19 restrictions!
