End of season report for Cambodia Sport

By Simon Hare | Development Director, Globalteer

All smiles as the soccer season comes to an end
All smiles as the soccer season comes to an end

Last month saw an exciting finish to this season’s Globalteer junior soccer league with teams from all over Siem Reap being awarded trophies for winning their respective divisions but also, for the first time, for being the leading teams in professionalism, teamwork and fair play!

Over the last four months over 1,000 children from more than 20 charity projects have taken part in the hotly contested soccer league and it was a great pleasure to be able to reward teams that displayed such valuable qualities as well as those who were best at winning soccer matches.

Another new initiative from our sports project that has had a really positive impact on the soccer league was Goals 4 Girls. Primarily an initiative that aims to help girls develop leadership skills, these new skills were realty put into practise as this year’s league was run almost entirely by girls participating in the programme.

Sadly this was our project manager’s season finale with Globalteer as he is leaving the sports programme to concentrate on soccer coaching. The programme usually slows right down at this time of year anyway due to the intense heat so we are taking advantage of the break in proceedings to review the sports programme before deciding on its exact format in the new season.

We will be talking to representatives from the NGOs and projects that are the main beneficiaries of the programme to get their input into what they want the programme to achieve in the future.

In the meantime thank you for all your support and we hope to bring you news of the revamped sports project in the very near future.
