Recently, at the Sandra Jones Centre, we planted a field of cabbages and a greenhouse of cabbages. Both were planted on the same day by the same people using the same seeds, water and fertilizer. These photos are testimony to one of the wonderful advantages of greenhouse farming. The difference in two 2 crops had to be seen to be believed.
During the Covid 19 lockdown there have been many shortages in Zimbabwe, including food. But for the staff and children of the Sandra Jones Centre this has not been a problem and our children have continued to eat healthy meals. Our greenhouses provide us daily with fresh vegetables for our meals and cash from the sale of the excess vegetables has contributed hugely towards purchasing other much needed staples for our large family. In fact we are now 100% food sustainable.
On top of this +/-30 girls each year receive training in greenhouse farming giving them a skill very few young people in the country have, which in turn gives our girls the edge they need in finding employment in the agricultural industry.
We will be forever grateful to AFCAids for partnering with us in our work to rescue abused and abandoned children.
