Empower 1300 kids through sport & education

It has been a busy and rewarding few months at VUSA, with our children taking part in rugby fixtures, entrepreneurship activities and expanded educational programmes. We have also taken an important step towards securing a permanent home for our work.

Our rugby teams enjoyed a full programme of matches during the term, giving the children opportunities to develop their skills, represent VUSA and put the values of teamwork, commitment and discipline into practice. The season concluded with our final fixture against Wetpups, which was a special way for the children and coaches to bring the rugby year to a close.

Our Under-13 children also participated in the Young Entrepreneurs programme. With support and guidance, they developed their own business ideas, considered costs and pricing, and prepared products to sell at their Market Day. The event gave them practical experience in planning, teamwork, customer service and managing money. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they presented and sold their products to the community.

One of our most significant developments has been the expansion of our SEED foundational learning programme into five primary schools in Langa. The programme currently supports an additional 591 Grade R children through structured lessons focused on early literacy, numeracy, English language development and learning through play.

This expansion allows us to reach children before learning gaps become firmly established. From next year, we plan to extend the programme through the Foundation Phase, potentially increasing its reach to as many as 3,000 children. This will enable VUSA to support children consistently from their earliest school years and strengthen the foundations they need for future learning.

We have also made significant progress towards purchasing the property from which many of our programmes operate. This has been made possible through the extraordinary generosity of an anonymous donor and the support of our incredible partner, Bishops Diocesan College. Having a permanent home will give VUSA greater stability and allow us to continue developing the space as a safe and welcoming centre where children can learn, play, receive a daily meal and access support.

It has been a busy and wonderful year so far. We are proud of how much the children and team have achieved, and we are looking forward to the final school term.
