While in school, girls require an environment that is supportive of menstrual hygiene management in order to ensure regular school attendance and participation.
Menstruation is surrounded by various psychological and religious barriers due to lack of knowledge about the scientific process of Menstruation. Many girls in the rural areas are un aware of what actually happens during the menstrual cycle. Although menstruation is a natural process, it is linked with several perceptions and practices within the community, which sometimes may result in adverse health outcomes.
Gaba hope for kids participated in a hiking event organized by Community -with an aim of breaking stigma around menstruation in the central Uganda.
It was a three days event which involved hiking up to Wakiso it was also inclusive of the adolescent girls from Gaba junior school school in order for them to understand the commitment of the hikers in making their lives meaningful. The event was successful because from the proceedings, school girls were supported with re-usable sanitary towels and knickers and community members were sensitized about the importance of keeping the girl child in school.
