Restore childhood: Ignite Dignity

By Maniragaba Elijah | Project leader

*Report: Restore Childhood, Ignite Dignity*
*Theme: Giving Children Back Their Right to Learn and Be Seen at Gaba Hope for Kids*

At Gaba Hope for Kids, we support 220 orphaned and vulnerable children aged 10-16 across 5 rural villages. For many of them, childhood has been cut short by poverty, caregiving responsibilities, early marriage pressure, and the shame of showing up to school without basic supplies. This term, our focus is on restoring what was lost: the space to be a child, to learn without shame, and to carry oneself with dignity.

*Why Restoring Childhood Matters*
When children spend their days worrying about food, clothes, or safety, they miss the chance to be curious, to play, to make mistakes and learn from them. That loss shows up as low attendance, quiet classrooms, and early dropout. Restoring childhood means removing those daily barriers so children can focus on school, friendships, and the future. Dignity follows when a child walks into class prepared, respected, and ready to participate.

*What We Are Doing*
We are combining material support with mentorship and community engagement to restore a sense of normalcy and worth for each child.

1. *Full Term Kits*: Distributed uniforms, shoes, notebooks, and pens to all 220 children before term started. No child was sent home for missing materials in week one.
2. *Menstrual Health and Hygiene*: Provided reusable pads and hygiene kits to 110 girls, with peer-led education sessions. Attendance among girls improved by 16% compared to last term.
3. *Daily Nutrition*: Served porridge to 120 children at our learning center, improving concentration and reducing mid-morning absences.
4. *Safe Spaces and Mentorship*: Ran weekly sessions on rights, goal-setting, and coping skills. Children are using these spaces to share challenges and support each other.
5. *Caregiver Engagement*: Held 6 community meetings on positive parenting and the value of education. 140 caregivers attended and committed to keeping children in school through the term.

*What We Are Seeing*
Attendance across the program reached 95% this month, the highest since we started. Teachers report more hands raised in class and fewer children sitting apart due to shame. Twelve children who had been out of school for over a month returned after receiving kits and a home visit. Caregivers say children are more open at home and talk about school with pride. Children themselves describe feeling “ready” and “equal” when they come to class.

*Challenges We Are Working Through*
The cost of shoes and uniforms continues to rise, making it harder to replace worn items mid-term. Transport to the most remote households slows our follow-up on absences. We also need more trained mentors to keep group sizes small and conversations meaningful as we grow.

*Next Steps*
To keep restoring childhood and igniting dignity, we plan to:

1. *Maintain Support Through Term End*: Keep nutrition, mentorship, and follow-up running consistently for all 220 children.
2. *Fundraise for Mid-Term Top-ups*: Secure funds to replace worn shoes and uniforms for 60 children before exams.
3. *Expand Peer Mentorship*: Train 8 new mentors to reduce group sizes and reach children in the two most remote villages.
4. *Track and Share Progress*: Record attendance, participation, and feedback monthly so we can adjust quickly and show donors the impact.

*Conclusion*
Restoring childhood is not about nostalgia. It is about giving children back the conditions that make learning and growth possible. Igniting dignity means making sure every child enters school with what they need and leaves with their head held high. Thanks to your support, that is happening for 220 children this term.

*Call to Action*
Help us finish the term strong. Your support ensures no child misses class because of a torn uniform, a missing notebook, or an empty stomach.
