Project Report | May 29, 2026
The 20 immediate needs.

By Nansubuga Bibiana | Fundraiser

*Report: The Twenty Immediate Needs*
*Theme: Removing Barriers, Opening Doors at Gaba Hope for Kids*

The twenty immediate needs are the practical barriers that keep children out of class today. They are not big projects. They are the exact things that decide if a child shows up, stays, and learns this term. Since 2021 we have supported over 860 children, and every story started by meeting one of these needs.

*The Twenty Immediate Needs*

*1. Learning Materials*
1. School kits: notebooks, pens, pencils, ruler
2. Textbooks + reading materials for study groups
3. Replacement materials when items are lost or worn out

*2. Dignity + Health*
4. Menstrual health kits for girls: reusable pads, soap, underwear, pouch
5. Soap + basic hygiene supplies for children
6. Safe, private spaces in schools for girls during menstruation

*3. Safe Structures + Seating*
7. Roof repairs so rain does not close classrooms
8. Fixed floors + walls to remove tripping hazards
9. Repaired desks + benches so each child has a seat
10. Windows + ventilation for light and fresh air

*4. Belonging + Support*
11. Peer mentors for home visits and follow-up
12. Study groups for children catching up after missed time
13. Safe space at school for children to talk and be heard
14. Teacher awareness training on care, not punishment

*5. Family + Community*
15. Guardian conversations about attendance + long-term goals
16. Support for children returning from street or long absence
17. Advocacy so “school is for every child, including girls”

*6. Protection + Stability*
18. Termly checks for roofs, furniture, and facilities
19. Lockable storage for books + supplies so materials stay safe
20. Early identification of children at risk of dropping out

*Why These 20 Matter*
Each need is a door. When a roof leaks, that is a door closed. When a girl has no pads, that is a door closed. When a child has no pen, that is a door closed. Meet the need and the door opens.

Teachers tell us attendance improves when these 20 are covered. Children tell us they feel proud and ready. Guardians tell us they can focus on long-term plans instead of daily crises.

*Next Steps To Meet These Needs*
1. *Assess Each Term*: Ask children + teachers which of the 20 are blocking learning right now.
2. *Respond Quickly*: Fix the door that is closing learning this week, not next year.
3. *Track + Sustain*: Keep records so we do not solve the same need twice and miss another child.

*Closing*
The twenty immediate needs are not a wishlist. They are the difference between a child on the street and a child in class. Between a girl missing days and a girl leading group work. Between a classroom closing and a lesson starting.

Every child deserves 20 fewer reasons to miss school.
