Report: Be A Change Children Need
Theme: Show Up Before A Child Is Lost at Gaba Hope for Kids
Be a change children need. Not someday. Now. Children do not drop out because they stop wanting to learn. They drop out because barriers grow heavier than their hope. Since 2021 we have supported over 860 children, and the children who stayed all had one thing in common: someone became the change they needed before they disappeared.
What Children Need Most
1. Presence Before Problems Grow: A leaking roof, missing materials, shame during menstruation, pressure at home. These barriers start small. When someone acts early, a child stays. When no one acts, a child leaves.
2. Dignity In Class: Girls need safety and privacy each month so they do not have to choose between their body and their education. Dignity is not extra. It is the condition for learning.
3. Belonging That Holds Them: A mentor who notices. Classmates who save a seat. Teachers who encourage after a wrong answer. Children stay where they feel they belong.
4. A Future That Feels Possible: Catch-up support, study groups, and honest conversations help children recover lost time. When a child understands again, they start dreaming again.
What Happens When You Be The Change
When you become the change a child needs, three things shift:
1. A Child Stays: The desk that would be empty is filled. The name on the register is not crossed out. One child kept is a future protected.
2. A Classroom Gets Stronger: When girls stay all term, when children from the street return, when no one is sent home for missing materials, the whole class learns better. Respect grows. Teamwork grows.
3. A Community Gains Builders: Children who complete school become teachers, nurses, builders, parents who expect more. The change you make in one child multiplies in the community they serve.
You do not need a title to be the change. You need to see the need and meet it. Fix the roof before the rain. Provide pads before shame. Sit with a child before pressure wins. Speak up before a child becomes invisible.
Next Steps To Be The Change
1. Listen First: Ask children and teachers what is actually stopping learning today. Then act on that.
2. Act Early: Meet the need in week one, not term three. Barriers are easier to remove before they break a child’s confidence.
3. Stay With Them: One gift helps. Sustained support builds a future. Keep showing up term after term.
4. Amplify Their Voice: Let children speak. Then speak for them in rooms they cannot enter.
Closing
Be a change children need. Because a child who is kept becomes an adult who keeps others. Because a barrier removed today is a dream protected tomorrow. Because every child deserves someone who will not let them fall through the cracks.
You can be that person. You can be that voice. You can be that reason a child says, “I stayed.”
Every child needs someone to be their change. Will you be it?
