GABA HOPE FOR KIDS
Empowering Vulnerable Children and Mothers in Wakiso District, Uganda
IMPACT REPORT
Theme: Replacing Menstrual Shame With Knowledge and Dignity
1. INTRODUCTION
GABA HOPE FOR KIDS is located in Kisigula Village, Wakiso District. Our mission is to ensure vulnerable children stay in school and to empower mothers and guardians with sustainable skills and knowledge.
Many girls miss school because of lack of information and support around menstrual health. This creates shame, silence and lost learning days. This report shares how we are replacing shame with knowledge and dignity.
2. OUR BELIEF
We believe no girl should miss school or feel ashamed because of menstruation. When we give girls correct information, reusable pads and confidence, we protect their dignity and their education.
3. ACTIVITIES IMPLEMENTED
A. Menstrual Health Education
- Conducted safe and friendly sessions with girls on understanding menstruation, body changes and hygiene.
- Held open talks to break myths, silence and stigma around periods.
- Provided guidance on how to track cycles and stay comfortable in school.
B. Dignity Support
- Distributed reusable sanitary pads to vulnerable school girls.
- Provided soap, underwear and hygiene kits to help girls stay clean and confident.
- Trained girls on how to make and care for reusable pads.
C. Mothers and Guardians Engagement
- Involved mothers in discussions about supporting girls during menstruation.
- Trained mothers in making reusable pads as an income-generating skill.
- Provided counseling and mentorship on positive parenting and communication.
D. School and Home Follow Up
- Visited schools and homes to ensure girls are staying in class during their periods.
- Encouraged teachers and guardians to create supportive and private spaces for girls.
4. IMPACT STORY - MEET FAITH
Faith is a young girl in primary school who lives with her grandmother. Before, she used to miss school for several days every month because she had no pads and felt too ashamed to ask for help.
She was losing valuable learning time and confidence.
Through our supporters, we taught Faith about menstrual health, gave her reusable pads and hygiene support. Today, she goes to school every day, even during her period. She is confident, active in class and proud of herself.
Faith says: Thank you for teaching me and giving me pads. Now I am not scared anymore. I can stay in school.
Faith shows why replacing shame with knowledge and dignity matters.
5. CHALLENGES
- Many more girls need information and reusable pads than we can currently reach.
- Rising costs of materials for making pads and hygiene kits.
- Deep cultural stigma and silence around menstruation still affects many girls.
- Need for more safe spaces and training materials for girls and mothers.
6. PLAN FOR NEXT
- Reach more schools with menstrual health education.
- Distribute more reusable pads and hygiene kits.
- Train more girls and mothers to make reusable pads.
- Continue community awareness to end menstrual shame and keep girls in school.
7. APPRECIATION
We sincerely thank all our donors on GlobalGiving, friends, volunteers and local leaders in Kisigula who stand with us. Your support is replacing shame with knowledge and dignity and keeping girls in school.
8. CONCLUSION
When we replace shame with knowledge and dignity, a girl stays in class, stays confident and stays hopeful about her future. With your continued support, more girls will learn without fear or shame.
