When Children Begin to Sing Their Own Story

By Lu Yue | TFT ER Team

Where does culture truly live?

Is it something children learn in a classroom?
Or does it grow when they find the courage to tell their own stories?
And what happens when children are given the chance to turn those stories into a song?

This was the journey one TFT teacher and her students experienced during a music creation camp in Danlu, a tribe in Pingtung.

A Song Waiting to Be Written

The idea began with a simple hope.

A TFT alumna, Sakenge, wanted to organize a music creation camp so that children who loved singing could create songs of their own.

When the students were asked what they hoped for, their answers were heartfelt:

“I hope more people can know about Danlu.”
“I don’t want to forget my tribe.”
“I want to record the things we worked hard on.”
“I want our culture to be passed on.”

Hearing these words, teacher Chiao-Yu felt deeply moved and joined the effort, hoping the voices of these children could be heard beyond their small village.

Before Music, There Was Courage

Preparing the camp took months—writing proposals, coordinating with musicians, planning activities, and gathering consent forms.

Everyone expected the journey to be inspiring.

But at the end of the first day, one student—Xiao-En (pseudonym)—quietly said:

“Teacher… I don’t want to come tomorrow.”

Soon the child explained:

“I don’t like singing.”
“The notes are too high.”
“I’m scared of the recording equipment.”

At that moment, the teacher realized something important: while the adults were ready, the children might not have been.

A Visit That Changed Everything

The next day, Xiao-En did not come.

After discussing it with the other students, the teacher made a bold decision—they would visit Xiao-En at home.

One teacher and two classmates spoke with the child for nearly an hour. There was no pressure—only listening, questions, and the message that the whole class hoped Xiao-En could be part of the journey.

Eventually, Xiao-En chose to return.

Not because anyone had forced the decision, but because Xiao-En realized  he was not facing his fears alone.

Singing From the Heart

During the camp, teachers chose not to force the children to sing in their tribal language or follow strict rules.

They believed that when children chose to sing, culture would naturally emerge.

And it did.

Together, the students created a song called “Walking to Danlu.”

The lyrics spoke of the Shebuli River, century-old trees, the Mudan Historic Trail, and the taste of cinavu (A signature traditional dish of the Paiwan). More than a song about a place, it captured the children’s courage and pride.

It became a moment when they rediscovered their own story—and began to love it.

When Children Find Their Voice

The journey was not easy, but it was deeply meaningful.

The rhythm of the drums and the voices singing tribal lyrics were not performances arranged by adults.

They were voices the children had discovered themselves.

At that moment, culture was not something taught.

It was something they chose to sing.

Thank You for Walking With Us

Because of your support, moments like this became possible—where children could explore learning, courage, and cultural identity together.
