Financial Literacy Training for Women Workers and FamiliesExecutive Summary

On October 5, 2025, INFEST Yogyakarta, in partnership with the Migrant Workers Community (KOPI), conducted a specialized Financial Literacy Training in Ponorogo. The program focused on equipping prospective Indonesian Women Migrant Workers (PMI) and their families with the tools needed for sound financial management and long-term family planning.

Participant Profile & Methodology

The training targeted prospective migrant workers, their families, and KOPI members. Since most attendees had previously completed safe migration training, this session served as a strategic continuation, moving from theoretical knowledge to the practical application of financial concepts in migration-related decision-making.

The facilitators employed a participatory approach, utilizing:

  • Interactive group discussions and experience sharing.
  • Case studies on remittance management.
  • Structured sessions led by INFEST staff and KOPI facilitators.

Key Thematic Areas

The curriculum was designed to link financial decisions directly to family well-being and long-term goals. Key topics included:

  • Household Budgeting & Saving: Practical strategies for managing daily expenses and building a safety net.
  • Remittance Management: Effective use of earnings from abroad to ensure sustainable economic growth for the family.
  • Family Communication: Strengthening ties and transparent dialogue between the worker abroad and the family at home.
  • Institutional Integration: Representatives from local banks provided insights into formal financial products (savings accounts and banking services), bridging the gap between migrant families and formal financial institutions.

Impact and Outcomes

  • Knowledge Growth: Pre- and post-test evaluations revealed a significant upward trend in participants' understanding of financial literacy.
  • Action-Oriented Results: Participants developed individual follow-up action plans to implement financial management practices immediately.
  • Strategic Collaboration: The presence of local financial institutions opened new doors for future cooperation between KOPI and the banking sector in Ponorogo.

Conclusion & Future Roadmap

The training was highly successful, with no significant implementation challenges reported. However, the need for ongoing mentorship was identified to ensure that the newly acquired skills translate into consistent household habits.

Next Steps: To sustain this momentum, INFEST will host an in-house training session in early December 2025. This follow-up will focus on supporting participants as they execute their financial action plans and refine their household management strategies.
