On December 26, KOPI Bringinan—our community-based organization for former and current Indonesian migrant workers—held its year-end general meeting at the Bringinan Village Cultural Hall. In a significant display of local leadership, KOPI Bringinan remains the only group among the five KOPI organizations in the region to consistently provide public financial and operational reports to both its members and the village government.
This level of transparency, supported by the presence of the Village Secretary, reinforces the foundation of trust necessary for long-term community development.
Operational Highlights: Livestock Management
One of our key economic initiatives is goat farming, which serves as a collective investment for our members. During this reporting period, we observed both challenges and growth:
Growth: Despite the loss of one goat, the overall livestock count has increased due to several successful births within the herd.
The Challenge of the "Gaduh" System: Currently, the goats are managed under the gaduh (shared caretaking) system, where individual members care for the animals in their own homes. Our evaluation shows that this decentralized model creates inconsistent care quality and high monitoring risks.
Strategic Pivot: Moving Toward Centralized Farming
To mitigate risks and ensure professional standards, KOPI Bringinan is planning a strategic shift. The Chairperson, Sarni, announced a plan to centralize livestock management.
Why Centralization?
Quality Control: Consistent feeding and health monitoring by dedicated, trained workers.
Professionalism: Moving from "informal care" to a "business-oriented" model.
Risk Reduction: Better protection against disease and environmental hazards.
The Chairperson noted that while this transition requires significant capital for facilities and labor, it is a necessary step to protect the public funds invested by our members.
Commitment to Our Members
As we closed the year-end meeting, we reminded all stakeholders that this enterprise is funded by the hard-earned contributions of migrant workers and their families. Our goal is to transform this activity into a professional social enterprise capable of providing sustainable profit-sharing for its members.
