Youth Wellness at the Forefront of SWB Programs

Coaching Boys Into Men for Peace Day 2021

Soccer and academic programs continue to enhance the lives of refugee youth at our Kampala, Uganda program. After briefly pausing programs due to a COVID-19 resurgence, we’ve returned safely to the classroom and pitch, with staff enforcing protocols to keep everyone safe and our programs running.

Coaching Boys Into Men
SWB has implemented a Coaching Boys Into Men program (in partnership with FUTURES Without Violence), which teaches boys about respect, accountability, and creating safe spaces for women and girls. In honor of International Peace Day, our boys teams Rhinos, Elephants, and Hyenas hosted a storytelling event for older boys and girls in the program. They shared experiences and held group discussions about the lessons they are learning as part of the CBIM program.

Kampala Girls League is Back
Season three of the Kampala Girls League kicked off in mid-September, with over 200 girls playing on 16 community teams from around the Kampala area. The league is divided into two brackets, Purple and Gold, and will run for 10 weeks. The previous season was cut short due to the pandemic, but we played for enough weeks to crown two champions: Azteks Football Academy in the Purple bracket and Katuuso in the Gold. “The league is important because it helps create more playing time for the girls and since they normally struggle to get friendly games around the community and district,” said Coach Fahaby Kitimbo.

Wellness Sessions
Our coaches, including Coach Immy, take great care to ensure that our participants are not only safeguarding against COVID-19 infection, but also maintaining emotional and mental health. Our Covid Response Program Wellness Sessions are small in-person groups in which we share methods to manage stress, improve communication and social relationships, and encourage healthy sleep and nutrition habits. We continue to wear masks and check temperatures to ensure a safe environment for all.

Coach Jules Featured on Goal-Click
As part of World Refugee Day, Coach Jules Mayele’s photo essay series was featured on the Goal-Click website, which highlights refugee experiences through their own words and images.. We invite you to visit the link at the end of this report to view Jules’ photos taken on a disposable camera during our last Kampala Youth Festival.
