The 5th Annual Kampala Youth Festival
![]()
We just completed our 5th Annual Kampala Youth Festival with much excitement and participation from 318 youth! This year, it was new and different in some ways. For example, we have just moved to a new center in the neighborhood. This led to a slight shifting around in our group make-up, with many new, Ugandan neighbors who joined the fun. The participants were divided into 5 teams, each identified by a color and an animal (such as the yellow lions) which were signified by colorful cloth bracelets.
Each of the 5 days had its own theme: refugee rights, HIV/AIDS, hygiene and sanitation (through partner organization
WASH United), and a football tournament. The last day was a summary of all that was learned throughout the week. We enjoyed different speakers from various organizations, such as
HIAS, UNYPA, and
Yawe Foundation, and also had visitors from
Tackle Africa,
Yarid, and
Xavier project, among others. Each day also included music, dance competitions and food after the educational activities of the day.
Young participants, such as Sammi, learned and reviewed how to properly wash their hands, while girls like Keren had a chance to shine as leaders of mixed-gender football3 teams. Our kids reviewed concepts about the HIV virus through educational soccer drills, and some of our youngest participants amazed us with their ability to dance like professionals! It was an amazing way to kick off 2016, and we are looking forward to an educational. soccer-filled year.
