Celebrating International Peace Day with the children of Soccer Without Borders Uganda is not complete without song and dance. The children’s’ favorite mantra, “Peace One Day, Peace Forever” is followed up by a song celebrating multiple cultures. “Soccer is the Peace, Soccer c’est la paix, soccer ni Amani, soccer Emirembe, soccer Amahoro (In English, French, Kiswahili, Luganda, and Kinyarwanda respectively). Compound is overrun with children of all ages, from five and six year olds singing as loud as they can, to seventeen years old and beyond keeping the children in order, it is clear we have all come together to celebrate the peace we all wish to see in the world.
The International Peace Day, on September 21st, was one of our major festivals consisting of song and dance, games and activities, learning about peace, and of course hand painting the compound. It was a reminder of why we are here doing what we are doing as Team Leaders; to see the older children leading the younger children in a chorus full of love and peace. To see the younger children put down their fists and instead put their arms around each other in hugs. And of course to see the hundreds of smiling faces. We have seen the power of a united community, one that can bring people together across cultural differences and highlight the hope and inspiration of the next generation.
