In a country grappling with inflation, unemployment, and economic uncertainty, the ability to earn a living can often mean the difference between survival and despair for families. LRBT has transformed the lives of 57 million patients since its inception in 1984. Of the 3 million patients expected to visit LRBT in 2024, almost 49% are men and around 150,000 eye surgeries are performed for men annually free of cost. This free of cost treatment enables the beneficiaries to lead independent, productive lives seeking an education, learning vocations and supporting their families.
Safeer, a 40-year-old laborer from Chakwal, Punjab, embodies the resilience of countless individuals striving to support their loved ones in the face of adversity. Safeer’s journey from despair to hope illustrates the transformative impact of LRBT’s mission to fight curable blindness.
Safeer lived a life defined by hard work. His days were spent lifting heavy loads and assisting on construction sites, using his physical strength to earn enough to support his family. This included his two daughters, a son, his brother, and his aging parents. They lived in a modest rented home, paying 12,000 PKR monthly, a significant strain on their meager income. Yet, Safeer’s determination ensured that his family’s basic needs were met.
However, life took a challenging turn when Safeer’s vision began to deteriorate, starting with his left eye. At first, he attributed the blurriness to exhaustion or long hours under the sun. Over time, the problem worsened, making it difficult for him to perform his job. Tasks that required precision—like identifying objects, reading instructions, or handling tools—became increasingly daunting. Safeer’s condition not only impacted his ability to work but also plunged his family into uncertainty and fear. Without treatment, he would lose his livelihood, and his family would be left without its primary breadwinner.
The cost of treatment was far beyond Safeer’s reach. Struggling to make ends meet, he was forced to stop working. His family’s financial situation deteriorated rapidly, causing immense stress. In this time of despair, a friend advised Safeer to travel to Karachi and visit LRBT—an organization renowned for providing free eye care to those in need.
When Safeer arrived at the LRBT Eye Hospital, he was welcomed with compassion and care. After undergoing a thorough examination, the doctors diagnosed him with cataracts in both eyes and recommended surgery. Although nervous, Safeer placed his trust in LRBT’s skilled medical team.
The day of his first surgery marked the beginning of a new chapter. The procedure was quick, efficient, and successful. When Safeer’s bandages were removed, he could see clearly for the first time in years. Overwhelmed with emotion, he expressed his gratitude to the doctors and staff. A few weeks later, his second surgery was performed, restoring full clarity to his vision.
With his sight fully restored, Safeer returned to work with renewed vigor and confidence. He resumed his role as a provider for his family, lifting their spirits and ensuring their stability. His productivity improved dramatically, allowing him to meet his family’s expenses and even save for the future. Beyond the financial relief, Safeer’s restored vision brought back his dignity and self-worth. He became a source of inspiration for others in his community, sharing his story and advocating for accessible healthcare.
Today, Safeer’s life is filled with hope. His journey highlights the profound impact of LRBT’s work—restoring not only vision but also livelihoods, independence, and dignity. By empowering individuals like Safeer, LRBT helps break the cycle of poverty and creates ripples of positive change across families and communities.
