Restoring Vision, Dignity, and Livelihood

LRBT (Layton Rahmatulla Benevolent Trust) has been at the forefront of the fight against curable blindness in Pakistan for nearly four decades. Each year, LRBT treats over 3.3 million patients, of which 49% are male. For these men, the restoration of sight is often more than a medical intervention — it is a lifeline that enables them to resume their role as breadwinners, regain their dignity, and provide for their families. By ensuring access to free, high-quality eye care, LRBT gives them a second chance at life, helping them lead productive, independent, and fulfilling lives.

Asif, 29 years old, hails from Punjab. A devoted husband and father of two young children, Asif was leading a stable and happy life, working a private job and proudly supporting his family.

However, his life took a sudden turn when he contracted shingles, a painful viral infection. What began as itching, burning, and rashes around his face and eyes eventually led to a severe complication: corneal opacity in both eyes. His once-clear vision turned cloudy, making it impossible for him to work. Losing his job was not just a financial crisis — it shook his confidence and left him deeply frustrated and hopeless, unsure how he would care for his family.

In this time of despair, someone directed Asif to LRBT. After thorough examination and registration, doctors confirmed he required corneal transplantation. Within a short time — and thanks to a generous cornea donation — Asif underwent successful transplant surgery in his left eye.

Today, Asif’s vision — and hope — have been restored. He now runs a small grocery shop alongside his brother, regaining his financial independence and ability to support his family. The gratitude he and his loved ones feel towards LRBT and the compassionate donors is immeasurable.

“LRBT didn’t just give me my sight back; it gave me back my role as a father, a husband, and a provider,” Asif shares with heartfelt emotion.

Asif’s story is one of thousands made possible each year by LRBT’s commitment to free, quality eye care for all. For countless male patients, this means reclaiming livelihoods, dignity, and stability — transforming not only their lives but also the future of their families.

With the continued support of donors and well-wishers, LRBT will keep ensuring that no man, woman, or child in Pakistan goes blind simply because they cannot afford treatment.
