Pakistan is currently facing significant economic challenges, including escalating petrol prices, rising inflation, and the likelihood of further currency devaluation. These pressures have placed immense strain on low-income households, particularly daily wage earners who depend on consistent productivity for survival. As a result, access to quality healthcare—especially specialized services like eye care—has become increasingly unaffordable. With nearly 26 million people in Pakistan suffering from some form of visual impairment, addressing this issue is both a humanitarian and economic priority, as effective treatment can contribute up to 1% to the country’s GDP by restoring productivity.
As Pakistan’s largest provider of free eye care, LRBT treats over 3.3 million patients annually, of which 49% are male adults—many serving as primary breadwinners. By restoring vision, LRBT enables these individuals to regain independence, sustain their livelihoods, and support their families. In the current economic climate, this role is more critical than ever, ensuring that inability to pay does not prevent access to essential treatment.
This project focuses on providing free, high-quality eye care services to male adults suffering from visual impairment, with the aim of restoring their ability to work and earn. By doing so, it directly contributes to poverty alleviation, household stability, and broader economic resilience.
Kamran’s story illustrates this impact. A bike mechanic and the sole provider for his wife and four young children, Kamran began to experience severe vision problems that made it difficult to carry out the detailed work his job required. The fear of losing his eyesight—and his livelihood—became overwhelming, while private treatment remained far beyond his means. Seeking help, he visited LRBT Mandra Hospital, where he was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes and assured that treatment would be provided free of cost.
Kamran underwent successful cataract surgeries in both eyes, and after recovery, his vision was fully restored. He returned to his work with renewed confidence, once again able to provide for his family with dignity. His story reflects not just restored sight, but restored hope and security for his household.
Through interventions like these, LRBT restores vision for economically active individuals, improves income stability, reduces financial burdens on vulnerable families, and contributes to national economic productivity. In these turbulent times, restoring sight is not just a medical service—it is an investment in human potential and a more resilient Pakistan.
