Empower Women and Girls through Menstrual Health

Greetings Supporters of Girls and Women,

Late last month BARKA Foundation joined forces with some of the biggest and best organizations in Burkina Faso- Wateraid, UNICEF, Plan International and the Burkina government- to honor the International Day of Menstrual Hygiene Management.

Referred to simply as "MHM Day", it was a day to draw national attention on this critical issue and to come together to break the taboo that surrounds menstruation so that girls can better understand the changes their body are going through and to prepare for it.

This national event which took place in Ouagadougou featured a theatre performance by a high school and a "SLAM" by a famous local female artist who spoke about the difficulties girls face due to the lack of resources at high schools in Burkina.

In addition to raising awareness on the national level, BARKA was also working locally, adding another new high school to our sensitization program, which brings the total number of high schools now to 7, and the total number of beneficiaries to over 2000!

We give thanks to our two project leaders, Martine Nazotin and Madame Zalle for steering our program into its 2nd year. This summer we will lay the groundwork to begin distributing menstrual cups to girls for the first time in Burkina's history, once school resumes session in the Fall.

We're so excited to be implementing this project which has such obvious and immediate impact, and we're so grateful to you for supporting it.
