Challenge

Girls in Korea's children's homes face severe gender inequality, limited access to education and hagwon (private tutoring academies), and few chances to explore careers like their peers. Staff report that far fewer girls aspire to or attend college compared to boys. Without guidance, social-emotional support, or real-world experiences, many age out vulnerable to workplace discrimination and unsafe or exploitative overseas job opportunities.

Solution

The GEM Program provides career education, entrepreneurship training, mentorship, and social-emotional learning for girls ages 8-18. Through workshops, hands-on projects, and guided reflection, girls gain critical skills, confidence, and exposure to new experiences, supporting academic success, emotional growth, and career readiness.

Long-Term Impact

This project will help 20-30 girls each year across two children's homes, from elementary to high school, build confidence, career goals, and social-emotional skills that support independence and long-term stability. With access to education, mentors, and real opportunities, the program reduces inequality and helps girls become confident, capable adults.
