A resilient start to 2024

A stunning Elkhorn coral survivor. A sign of hope.
A stunning Elkhorn coral survivor. A sign of hope.

In recent months, our fishermen-cum-coral gardeners have been working tirelessly as part of our marine science team to implement the most logical measures to respond to the deadly heat spike of last autumn that killed off most of our corals. Through our coral salvage efforts, we are fighting to ensure a future for Jamaica-wide reef restoration and increase both the biological and social resilience of our community. This involves long distance swimming to groundtruth miles of underwater coastline to find survivors and propagate these so we can start afresh: a monumental physical undertaking.

As always, our fishermen-cum-wardens are able to continue their duties to protect the sanctuary from illegal fishing thanks to your help. In addition to patrolling our seas, the team routinely repairs the buoys that mark the boundaries of the no-take zone.

Lastly, our community outreach efforts to encourage greater fisher engagement through creative means have most recently involved community meetings, workshops with the National Fisheries Authority on the latest legislation and we look forward to our next community fish fry in 2024.
