When Sreynith first arrived at Primary School, she was a timid seven year old who kept her eyes down and rarely spoke to anyone outside her family. Her grandmother, the woman who raised her from birth, worried constantly about her future. But today, thanks to your support, Sreynith is a confident second grader who eagerly greets her classmates each morning and proudly shows off her reading skills.

This transformation didn't happen by chance. It's the result of your partnership with dedicated educators, loving families and Epic Arts' commitment to inclusive education.

The Early Struggles

Sreynith's life began with challenges. Born with epilepsy, she experienced frightening episodes where she would stop breathing. Her grandmother fought tirelessly to care for her, traveling to hospital for regular medication and monitoring. "I tried very hard to care for and treat her," she recalls. "That is why she is who she is today."

Beyond the medical challenges, Sreynith faced something perhaps even more painful: social isolation. Her health condition made her seem "a little different" to others in the community, and some people made hurtful comments that deepened her withdrawal. She was shy, afraid of others and frequently unwell.

While Sreynith attended the local state school like her peers, she struggled to keep up. Reading was particularly difficult, the vowels and consonants seemed to blur together and traditional teaching methods weren't reaching her.

A Door Opens

Everything changed when the school director made an announcement: Epic Arts, in partnership with Caritas Australia, were opening an integrated classroom at the school. The Buddhist Library Organization encouraged Sreynith's grandmother to enroll her, and though uncertain, she took a chance.

"Through learning here, she has made good progress," her grandmother says, her voice filled with pride. "She has gained more knowledge than before and improved her communication with new people."

The integrated classroom uses creative teaching methods, images, symbols and letters, that make learning accessible and engaging. The teachers, trained Epic Arts staff, are patient, kind and attentive, taking time to understand each student's unique needs. For Sreynith, this approach unlocked something that traditional methods couldn't reach.

Project Impact: A Community Transformed

The changes rippled far beyond Sreynith herself. Your support has helped shift attitudes throughout the community. Her family, who once heard discouraging comments from neighbours, now watches with joy as community perceptions change. Her siblings, uncles and aunts have become her cheerleaders, reminding her to study hard and stay committed.

"I am very happy with Epic Arts' integrated classes," her grandmother says simply, but the emotion behind those words speaks volumes.

Sreynith now divides her time between the state school and the Epic Arts integrated classroom, getting the best of both worlds, general education alongside specialized support. She's made close friends in the integrated classroom and looks forward to seeing them each day. The shy girl who once avoided eye contact now initiates conversations and participates eagerly in group activities.

Today, four people live under one roof in Sreynith's home including her siblings and her elderly grandmother. Resources are limited, and school materials for the public school are often beyond reach. But hope is abundant.

"I hope and believe that Sreynith will gain knowledge and become a truly independent person in society, with a job like others," her grandmother shares. It's a modest dream in its simplicity, yet profound in what it represents: a future where Sreynith isn't defined by her health condition or early struggles, but by her potential and determination.
