Empower Peruvian Women Living in Poverty

The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the entire world, and our Women’s Empowerment initiative is no exception. Severe lockdown orders in Peru mean that we have not been able to travel to the communities where we are working to continue building guinea pig sheds. The women working with the existing structures have been able to carry out their work, however, successfully raising guinea pigs.

In the coming weeks, Peru’s lockdown should be easing, allowing the women to travel to the local markets to begin selling guinea pigs and earning their first profits. We hope to bring you news of that soon.

Organic Farming Plans

Once we are allowed to travel, buy supplies in local shops, and meet with the women in the communities again, we have exciting plans to add a new aspect to our programme! Several women have expressed interest in having greenhouses so that they can begin organic farming of vegetables and fruits known to grow well in the area. The cool climate of Cusco means that greenhouses are necessary for growing certain vegetables and fruits outside of the normal potatoes and quinoa, and having a crop of these products will bring in more income for the women in Pinagua and surrounding villages, allowing them even more opportunities for economic independence.

We are working on building plans for the first greenhouse, and as soon as we are able to get to building and training, we will! Please stay tuned for further updates!
