Empowerment of Peruvian Girls

By Jim Elliott | Project Leader

Young girl in rural Peru
Young girl in rural Peru

Globalteer has designed a workshop to teach girls in Peru about how to keep themselves safe.

Our workshops have 8 parts:

Part 1 : identity and culture

Part 2 : relationships with family and friends

Part 3 : violence and staying safe

Part 4 : girls rights and values

Part 5 : gender norms and equality

Part 6 : the body and development

Part 7 : sexuality and reproductive health

Part 8 : skills for future wellbeing

The next classes will be delivered next week by our Intern who has experience in working in human rights and is in a great position to deliver the workshop to young girls in rural Peru.

Teaching girls in Peru about keeping themselves safe is crucial for several reasons:

Empowerment: Education on personal safety empowers girls by providing them with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and protect themselves from potential dangers. This empowerment contributes to building self-confidence and a sense of agency.

Reducing Vulnerability: Girls, especially in vulnerable communities, may face various risks, including violence, harassment, and exploitation. By teaching them about safety measures, the workshop aims to reduce their vulnerability and enhance their ability to recognize and respond to potential threats.

Awareness of Rights: Many girls may not be fully aware of their rights or may feel powerless in asserting them. Safety education can include information about legal rights, emphasizing that every girl has the right to live free from violence and discrimination.

Building a Support Network: The workshop fosters the development of a support network, encouraging girls to identify trusted adults and resources in their lives. This network can be vital in times of crisis or when they need assistance.

Addressing Social Issues: Peru, like many other countries, faces social issues such as gender-based violence, unequal power dynamics, and discrimination. Safety education provides a platform to discuss and address these issues, contributing to broader societal change.

Digital Safety: With the increasing prevalence of technology, teaching girls about digital safety is essential. This includes understanding online risks, protecting personal information, and recognizing signs of online exploitation.

Promoting Healthy Relationships: Education on safety often involves discussions about healthy relationships. By fostering an understanding of what constitutes a respectful and supportive relationship, girls can make more informed choices in their interactions with others.

Breaking Gender Stereotypes: Safety education can challenge traditional gender norms and stereotypes that may limit girls' opportunities or place them at a disadvantage. By encouraging them to pursue their aspirations and challenge societal expectations, the workshop contributes to fostering gender equality.

Preventing Exploitation: Girls are sometimes targeted for various forms of exploitation. Safety education equips them with the tools to recognize potential threats, say no to unwanted advances, and seek help when needed.

Life Skills Development: Beyond immediate safety concerns, the workshop imparts life skills that are essential for personal development. These skills include communication, critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving, all of which contribute to a girl's overall well-being and resilience.

In summary, teaching girls in Peru about keeping themselves safe goes beyond immediate physical safety; it is a holistic approach to empower them, promote their rights, and contribute to a safer and more equitable society.
