TOGETHER, WE TACKLE THE CHALLENGES OF THIS QUARANTINE
By Carolina Selles | Marketing

For over 100 days, we’ve been on quarantine. For over 100 days, Compassiva suspended its face-to-face activities: LAR program's Portuguese classes for refugees, Life-changing Workshops program's meetings for women living in Liberdade, Dojo program's jiu-jitsu training for teenagers living in our neighborhood… We really miss being with these folks.
Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean that we sat idle before such a challenging situation we're living now. We have been mobilizing to meet emergency needs which are increasing on account of the pandemic. Thanks to donations from partner organizations and generous people, we’ve been offering support to hundreds of people.
If wars and persecutions take people away from their homes, work, family and country, we will be the hug.
Thousands of people seek refuge in Brazil and we want to be the support for those who have, in front of them, a new language to learn and many challenges to strengthen their stories.
If we are the foreign soil of those looking for better life prospects, we want to be home.

Offering Help for Refugees, since 2014
By Debora Blair | Project Leader
The NGO Compassiva assists refugees in the LAR Program (the abbreviation if Portuguese for "Offering Help for Refugees") since 2014.
We currently have 130 students enrolled in the Portuguese classes since January of 2020, with an average of 90 students regularly present. The beginners class has currently the record of enrolled students: 42 in total. Furthermore, there's a waiting list of 12 refugees for our portuguese classes due our lack of space. We are currently working in our maximum capacity.
These people are also assisted with social work services and labour integration services. They come mostly from Syria and Palestine; the other nationalities served are Morrocans, Egyptians, Iranians, Iraqians, Afegans, among others.
We also count on 57 volunteers working in all of these projects on a regular basis, plus around 5 or 6 others that serve the projects in punctual demands.
