Empower Street Youth with Sustainable Livelihood

It's with great joy that we would like to share that with your support we successfully made it through the GlobalGiving accelerator program. Looking back fills us with pride and sense of accomplishment. This is our first report on this project and we are excited to share that work is well under way to make transformational impact through providing rehabilitation and alternative to street life for street youth in Kaduna.

The challenge of street youth and drug misuse in Kaduna State is an enormous one. Substantial number of young people are becoming more socially disorganized leading to escalation of drug misuse. A socially disintegrated and under-productive youth population point that the future of the state is in jeopardy, and this situation portrays a bad future for the state if left to continue.
Motorparks, markets and major streets are now dallied by youth with dirty, tattered and agged dresses. Physically dejected and psychologically displaced, sometimes also looking malnurished. Many of them are neglected by their parents, abandoned and rejected by the society.
Sadly because of their involvement in the streets, they find it difficult to obtain the support and care they need for their numerous physical and psychological problems. As if to worsen their situation there is no program or support for them either by the government, organizations or religious groups.

Most street youth want to get off the street but need support and help in reorienting their lives. This is why Empower Street Youth with Sustainable Livelihood has become necessary to tackle this challenge.
Activities started on the project on February 9 with an outreach to Sabon Tasha community in Kaduna South, we are in the first phase of the project which has to do with identifying the beneficiaries. So far we have identified six street youth who are now under our care. We make sure they are provided with shelter, food and security, this will help us connect with them emotionally and socially.
After we have gained their trust and confident and also succeed in raising their motivation, we will go into the next phase of the program. In this phase they will be receiving addiction services, trauma recovery and mental health care. We are hoping to increase the number to ten by July, in this case we shall be needing more support from from you and anyone that will be interested to support this initiative.
