Restoring Hope to Widows in Bukavu

By AGIZO JOSUE | CORDINATOR

Context and Rationale

In the city of Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, many women become widows due to armed conflict, disease, or widespread poverty. These women, often mothers of several children, are left alone, without support, employment, or means to provide for their families. Abandoned and vulnerable, they fall into cycles of poverty, isolation, and despair.

In response to this harsh reality, our project seeks to restore dignity, autonomy, and hope to these widows through professional sewing training.

Project Objective

The Empower Widows With Sewing Skills in Bukavu project aims to:

  • Provide widows with a safe, fully equipped, and welcoming space to learn sewing skills.
  • Supply essential tools and materials: sewing machines, fabric, accessories, etc.
  • Offer free professional training in garment-making, school uniforms, and handbags.
  • Set up business mentoring to help them market their products in local markets.
  • Build a community network where trained women will become trainers for others.

Expected Social Impact

  • Economic empowerment: widows gain the ability to earn a stable income.
  • Skills transfer: trained women become mentors, creating a ripple effect.
  • Children’s education: self-sufficient mothers can afford school for their children.
  • Stronger communities: confident women, empowered families, and resilient societies.
